Chief Magaw Responds to Outcome of Officer’s Trial

Police Officer First Class Charles Pickard was convicted today of second degree assault, reckless endangerment and one count of malfeasance. The incident involves conduct which occurred while Officer Pickard was on duty on November 12, 2013. He was a School Resource Officer assigned to Suitland High School. The officer struck a student.

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division immediately launched an investigation after learning of the incident through a routine, internal use of force review. Officer Pickard’s police powers were suspended on November 14, 2013.

The Chief today held a news conference about the trial's outcome with Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks.

"One of the key reasons we have school resource officers in our schools is to serve as an example to students. When one of these officers abuses that authority, it won't be tolerated and that officer will be held accountable," said Chief Mark Magaw.

Pickard has been employed by the PGPD for six years and was assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.
