PGPD Investigates Police Involved Shooting in Chapel Oaks

Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigative Response Team (SIRT) is investigating a police involved shooting that occurred in Chapel Oaks, Maryland.

On August 3, 2011, at approximately 10:20 p.m., officers responded to the 1700 block of Marblewood Avenue for a report of a man armed with a handgun. As uniformed officers approached Borntruth Booker, 23, he fled from the scene and a foot chase ensued. The second suspect, Khalil Sharif Booker, 22, was lying in wait behind bushes, fired on the officers, striking one officer in the arm. A second officer was then forced to fire his departmentally issued service weapon at Khalil Booker. Khalil Booker was apprehended a short distance away inside of a vacant house and Borntruth was apprehended at his address in Capitol Heights. The weapon believed to have been used in the assault was also recovered on the scene. Borntruth and Khalil are from the 1600 block of Jutewood Avenue in Capitol Heights.

Both Borntruth and Khalil Booker have been charged with 1st and 2nd degree attempted murder, 1st and 2nd degree assault, wear and carry a handgun in the commission of a crime, wear and carry a handgun, reckless endangerment, and have been remanded to the Department of Corrections.

The officer involved in discharging his departmental issued weapon has been identified as Corporal Travis Rickert, a 6 year veteran. Police Officer First Class Julian Mitchell, 4 year veteran, has received treatment for non-life threatening injuries to his arm. All officers are assigned to the Bureau of Patrol and have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
